This writer demonstrates the art of really good writing. Please note that it takes a little while to get into this book and understand what she is doing. However, soon you will be drawn into the lives of the characters and really feel like you are living in the heart of the Congo (now Zaire). Although the author is a bit preachy at times, none the less, this is a truly excellent and enjoyable book.

Although this book sounds rather intriguing, I think I'll stick to more true-to-life stuff. You say, "While I admit that much damage has been done in the name of God, . . ." makes me think that it represents God in the wrong way, giving even more reason for nonbelievers to remain nonbelievers. I appreciate good Christian literature rather than this. You did a good review of the book. It just doesn't sound like my type of reading.

Poisonwood Bible makes for a good read and I agree with Kingsolver in one respect...

In Kenya for example, Christianity is still treated with a lot of suspicion because there's sense in which it was used to cement colonialism and to generally disenfranchise the Africans.

In history, we told that Westerners came with the Bible in one hand and the gun in the other. More than a century since it was brutally introduced, Christianity is an inalienable part of Kenya culture but many "devout" Christians still practice distinctly animist traditions.

What I LOVE about books is that they don't become 'dated' like films and games do - books will always be great no matter how late you find them - which means you can find great bargains!

I just didn't "get" the hype about this book, I enjoyed it but sometimes she lost me in all the prose and descriptions. Perhaps an audio version would be enjoyable, but as you said "a hefty listen". You would have to pay exact attention to even grasp what she's getting at half the time.

Hi,
I don’t usually feel the need to be defensive on behalf of characters in a work of fiction. I enjoyed the book, I also found it a bit troubling on some levels.
Thanks.

Most missionaries have a lot of training to do before they hit the field full-time. Language, Bible study, culture, administration. It is either training done with a school or on-the-job with other missionaries with more experience.

The people I know and work with wouldn't make very interesting novels because of the lack of conflict. I hope the book was written with a character plucked from the stereotypes of hollywood rather than the experiences of the author.
